SYNOPSIS
"The Blue of Distance" is a stop-motion short film & poetry piece by Sophia Robichaux. It asks the question, “What does love look like today for Gen-Z?” Much of Gen-Z has been online since they were children. This means a lot of their “firsts” happened on the internet, instead of i.r.l. (in real life) like previous generations. The digital world was uncharted waters for much of the 2000s & many parents could never have known the things their children would see, hear, or talk about online with strangers. "The Blue of Distance" follows the emotional & confusing nature of one of these "firsts"... relationships.

The puppet was made of both soft and hard components. Its skeleton was made of aluminum wire and copper tubing which was then covered in a thin foam wrap. The skeleton was then cast in silicone from a plaster mold and handpainted with silicone paints. Both the arms & feet are designed to be easily removable and replaceable with copper tubing joints. The head is also removable and made of a two-part plastic taken from a silicone mold. The hair was made from hand-dyed natural fibers like yarn & raffia with wire running through select pieces to aid in the flow of the hair in animation. The eyes are made of wooden beads. The eyelids and lips are all made of sculpted epoxy pieces and held on with museam wax to make it easier to take on/off for replacement animation. The clothing was made through a combination of hand sewing and machine sewing.
